How to Identify Down’s syndrome hailed

Testing pregnant women's blood for disorders in unborn children promises dramatic advances in medicine, researchers have said.A US team writing in the New England Journal of Medicine say Down's syndrome can be reliably tested for in the mother's blood. Meanwhile, Great Ormond Street Hospital has started offering similar tests.A decision on whether the UK's Down's syndrome screening programme should change is due this year.At the moment in the UK, a woman is assessed based on her age and an ultrasound scan, with those deemed high-risk having further tests. These involve a needle taking a sample of the placenta or the fluid that bathes the baby. There is a risk of miscarriage with the procedure.Blood tests look for fragments of DNA from the placenta, which drift about in the mother's bloodstream.Down's syndrome is caused by an extra copy of a huge stretch of DNA and that extra bundle of genetic information can be detected in the blood. If initial tests are ...

How can grow hair without medicine?

Plucking hairs in a precise pattern can make even more pop up in their place, a US study suggests.  Playing with the density of hair removed altered how serious an injury the body recognised and in turn how much hair regrew. The team managed to regenerate 1,300 hairs by plucking 200, in the study using mice reported in Cell journal. Experts said it was "really nice science" but were uncertain if it could lead to a cure for human baldness. Half of men have male-pattern baldness by the age of 50. The team at the University of Southern California was investigating how hair follicles communicate with each other to decide on the scale of repair job needed.  Inflammation   In a series of experiments they removed 200 hair follicles from a circular patch of skin in mice. A low-density pluck - removing follicles from a patch 6mm in diameter - led to no regeneration at all. A medium-density pluck, with 200 removed from a 5mm circle, led to 1,300 new ha...

Salt water turned into drinking water using solar power

By inexpensively turning salt water into drinking water using sustainable solar power, a team from MIT in the US has not only come up with a portable desalination system for use anywhere in the world that needs it, but it’s just won the 2015 Desal Prize - a competition run by USAID to encourage better solutions to water shortages in developing countries, reports sciencealert.com . In order to win the $140,000 prize, entries had to demonstrate how their invention not only works well, but is cost-effective, environmentally sustainable, and energy efficient. And the MIT researchers teamed up with US-based manufacturing company, Jain Irrigation Systems, to do just that.

Depression makes heart failure worse!

People with heart failure must be screened for signs of depression and offered counselling, scientists say. A small study presented at the European Society of Cardiology suggested patients with depression were more likely to die within a year.Though many factors are likely to influence this including the severity of the disease, researchers say managing depression is important.Heart failure can happen when the muscle of the heart becomes too weak or too stiff, making it harder to pump blood around the body. And as this becomes worse patients can feel very tired and short of breath. It is likely that other factors are important as well; some people with depression may not feel motivated to take their pills or seek help quickly, scientists suggest.

Salt causes more than high blood pressure & Limiting salt intake can help prevent a silent killer

Many people have no idea that they have high blood pressure until they go to a doctor and are told of their condition.  High blood pressure is a silent killer  due to the fact there seems to be few, to no symptoms that one can feel. In the meantime, too much salt in the diet is damaging not just our blood pressure, but also with our vital organs. High salt consumption can lead to reduced function of the inner lining of blood vessels. Therefore a person is at increased risk of infections and blood clots. Too much salt also complicates the hearts main pumping chamber, causing  it to thicken and eventually it won’t pump as forcefully as needed. According to Dr. William Farquar from the  University of Delaware , “too much salt in your diet will sensitize neurons in the brain, therefore causing painful response to skeletal muscle contractions.” Reducing salt consumption is important for everyone. The healthy person should have just a little over 2,000 milli...
